Short guide about Malaysia Administration


Malaysia is ruled by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, the Sultan of Terengganu while administration of the country is through a democratic system. Currently Malaysia is under the government of the National Coalition party known as the Barisan Nasional. The Barisan Nasional government has ruled the country since it gained its independence from the British in 1957.

The Barisan Nasional's biggest party is UMNO (United Malays National Organisation). Other component parties are MCA (Malaysian Chinese Association), MIC (Malaysian Indian Congress) and other smaller component parties like Parti Bersatu Sabah, Sabah Progressive Party, Gerakan and the Sarawak People's Party, among many others.

The opposition front, known as the Pakatan Rakyat is led by former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim consists of a coalition of the opposition parties. The largest party is the Parti Keadilan Rakyat which is led by Datuk Seri Anwar's wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, DAP (Democratic Action Party) led by Karpal Singh and PAS (Pan Malaysian Islamic Party) led by Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.

The recent general elections were held in March 2008 where the national coalition suffered a major setback. They failed to recapture the two third majority as they did in the elections before that and lost 5 states to the opposition front, the Pakatan Rakyat who formed the state governments of Penang, Perak, Kedah and Kelantan. This was seen as the worst defeat ever faced by the Barisan Nasional.
