Chow Kit Targeted in Op Kutip, 79 Illegal Migrants Held

KUALA LUMPUR : A total of 79 undocumented migrants were detained during an enforcement operation known as Op Kutip carried out in the Chow Kit area of Kuala Lumpur.

The operation was conducted by the Malaysian Immigration Department, focusing on public spaces, commercial premises and locations identified as gathering points for foreign nationals. Checks were carried out on individuals suspected of failing to produce valid travel documents or work permits.

Those detained comprised men and women of various age groups and are believed to be from several countries. Preliminary investigations found offences including overstaying, lack of valid identification documents and misuse of visit passes.

All individuals arrested were taken to an immigration depot for further investigation under existing immigration laws. Authorities are also examining whether employers or third parties were involved in harbouring or facilitating the presence of undocumented migrants.

The operation forms part of ongoing enforcement efforts to curb illegal immigration and ensure compliance with national laws.

The Immigration Department said similar operations will continue to be carried out periodically to safeguard public order, security and national sovereignty.
