KUALA LUMPUR — The Attorney-General (AG) has defended the decision to take “No Further Action” (NFA) on the criminal cases involving Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, emphasizing that the conclusion was reached only after careful consideration of all facts and evidence.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, the AG said that the NFA decision, which has drawn public scrutiny and media attention, was made following thorough review and deliberation by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).
“This was not a decision that was made lightly,” the AG said. “We examined the evidence, the legal merits, and the implications carefully before arriving at this outcome. Every angle was considered to ensure the integrity of the decision.”
The cases in question relate to allegations of criminal breach of trust, corruption, and other offenses. While the High Court had previously ruled that there was a prima facie case against Zahid, the AGC concluded that pursuing the matter further would not be in line with the available evidence and legal standards.
The AG emphasized that the decision to issue an NFA does not mean that investigations were neglected or that wrongdoing is ignored. Rather, it reflects a legal assessment that continuing the prosecution would not meet the required threshold for a successful case in court.
“The role of the AG’s Chambers is to ensure that justice is administered fairly and in accordance with the law,” the AG said. “Our responsibility is not to act under public pressure, but to follow due process and legal principles.”
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions across the political spectrum, with supporters arguing that the decision upholds fairness and opponents questioning the reasoning behind it. Legal experts note that NFA decisions are standard practice in cases where evidence or legal merit does not justify prosecution, even in high-profile cases.
The AG concluded by stressing the independence of the office and its commitment to upholding the rule of law, saying that all decisions are made with careful analysis, professional judgment, and in line with Malaysia’s legal framework.
