KUALA LUMPUR : Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today announced plans to establish a special task force aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s national audit system, in a move to improve transparency and accountability in public financial management.

Anwar said the task force would focus on monitoring and enhancing existing audit mechanisms, identifying gaps in current procedures, and proposing proactive measures to prevent mismanagement or misuse of public funds.

“The integrity of our audit system is central to public trust in how national finances are managed. This task force will ensure that every process is conducted efficiently, transparently, and free from undue interference,” he told reporters at a press conference in Putrajaya.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the team would work closely with the National Audit Department, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and other enforcement agencies to ensure audit reports are objective and accurate.

He added that the initiative is part of broader efforts to restore investor confidence and strengthen governance within the public sector, particularly in the post-pandemic era where effective financial management is critical.

The government also plans to introduce periodic reporting on improvements to the audit system to Parliament, enabling lawmakers and the public to monitor progress and hold authorities accountable.

Observers noted that the move comes in response to recent revelations of financial leakages and weaknesses in public project management, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring public funds are used responsibly and effectively.
