KUALA LUMPUR : Law and Institutional Reform Minister Azalina Othman Said has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) from both sides of the political divide to cooperate in passing key criminal law reforms, stressing that public safety and justice should rise above partisan differences.
Speaking during a parliamentary session, Azalina said comprehensive reforms were necessary to ensure that Malaysia’s criminal justice framework remains effective, fair, and aligned with current realities. She emphasized that many existing laws were outdated and required urgent updates to address modern forms of crime and evolving social challenges.
She called on lawmakers to approach the proposed amendments constructively, noting that public expectations for a safer society depend heavily on the effectiveness of the legal system. “We must put aside political differences and focus on what is best for the rakyat,” she said, adding that collaboration would help ensure thorough debate and stronger legislation.
Azalina also highlighted the importance of balancing firm enforcement with the protection of fundamental rights. She said legal reforms should safeguard public security while upholding due process and justice for all individuals.
The minister expressed confidence that bipartisan cooperation would lead to meaningful legislative outcomes, paving the way for a more robust and credible criminal justice system in the country.
