Bersatu Figure Calls for Zahid–Muhyiddin Talks on Election Cooperation

PETALING JAYA : A senior figure from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia has urged UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to consider opening channels of communication on possible electoral cooperation.

The Bersatu leader said prolonged divisions among Malay-based political parties risk diluting voter support and creating unnecessary advantages for rival coalitions in future elections. He argued that early engagement, even at an informal level, would allow both sides to evaluate political realities without immediate commitments.

According to him, voters are increasingly focused on issues such as the cost of living, economic recovery and leadership stability, rather than prolonged political disputes. He said political leaders should reflect this shift by prioritising practical solutions over entrenched rivalries.

The leader acknowledged that trust between UMNO and Bersatu has yet to be fully restored, but maintained that dialogue does not equate to surrendering principles. Instead, he said discussions could help clarify boundaries, reduce misunderstandings and prevent damaging three-cornered contests.

He added that any form of cooperation, if pursued, should be based on transparency, mutual respect and clearly defined terms to avoid repeating past conflicts.

To date, there has been no official response from Zahid or Muhyiddin regarding the suggestion for talks on a potential electoral understanding.
