The families of three men shot dead in Durian Tunggal, Melaka, on Nov 24 have rejected the police’s account, claiming the victims were unarmed and did not attack any officers.
At a press conference , Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) revealed a phone recording between one of the victims and his wife, captured moments before and during the shooting. In the audio, the man is heard pleading, “Don’t, I have a child!” .before gunshots ring out.
The families alleged that police claims — including that one suspect slashed an officer with a machete — were “fabricated”. They said the three men cooperated with officers and had no weapons. LFL said the audio had been sent for independent forensic analysis.
According to the families, the man had called his wife after noticing a Perodua Aruz following their car. Their vehicle later stalled, and the shooting happened while the call was still connected.
The families said this contradicts police statements that the victims, alleged members of “Geng Durian Tunggal”, had ambushed officers during “Op Casa Melaka”.
Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar previously said the trio, aged 21 to 29, were on their way to commit a robbery and had attacked officers, injuring a corporal. Police also reported finding machetes and tools at the scene, linking the group to over 20 robberies in Melaka, Negri Sembilan and Selangor.
