Hanipa criticises the authorities for using heavy-handed tactics against peaceful rally participants, urging a fair and democratic approach consistent with current governance.

Former Deputy Minister and PKR leader Hanipa Maidin has criticised the police for their handling of recent rally-related arrests, saying the authorities should not behave as if the country were still under the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration.

According to Hanipa, the arrests — which targeted individuals participating in peaceful demonstrations — appear disproportionate and reminiscent of a time when public assemblies were often suppressed without adequate justification. He urged the police to respect citizens’ constitutional rights to assemble and express their views.

“Malaysia today is governed differently. Citizens should be able to voice their opinions without fearing excessive enforcement or intimidation. Acting like it’s the old BN era only erodes public trust in law enforcement,” Hanipa stated.

He added that fair enforcement of the law is important, but it must be balanced with respect for democratic freedoms. Heavy-handed actions risk creating unnecessary tension and political backlash, which ultimately undermines social harmony and public confidence in the authorities.

Hanipa called for a measured, transparent, and accountable approach from the police, emphasising that upholding the law should not mean stifling legitimate political expression.
