Prime Minister stresses that while demolitions of unapproved houses of worship are inappropriate, all countries, including India, regulate temple construction to ensure compliance with planning and safety laws.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim commented on recent debates over the demolition of unauthorised houses of worship, stressing that while targeting religious sites is a sensitive issue, proper regulation is necessary to maintain order and safety.

“Demolishing any place of worship is never ideal. But even in India, temple construction is subject to strict planning laws and approvals. Every country has rules to manage where and how religious buildings are built,” the Prime Minister said.

He added that Malaysia’s approach is not about restricting religious freedom, but about ensuring that structures comply with safety, zoning, and planning regulations. The aim is to balance the constitutional right to practice one’s faith with broader public interests, including urban planning and community safety.

Anwar also urged dialogue and patience, highlighting that local authorities have a duty to guide communities on proper procedures rather than resorting to unilateral action. “We encourage communities to work with authorities, follow the correct procedures, and resolve disputes amicably,” he said.

The Prime Minister reiterated that harmony between communities remains a priority and that all enforcement actions are intended to uphold the law, not target any particular faith.
