KUALA LUMPUR : Communications Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has warned against exploiting religious sentiments to incite hatred, division, and conflict in Malaysia’s multi-racial and multi-religious society.

He said the misuse of religion for political or personal agendas could threaten national harmony and undermine long-standing efforts to build unity and mutual respect among Malaysians.

“Religion should be a source of peace, compassion, and understanding, not a tool to provoke hostility or sow discord,” he said in a statement today.

Aaron stressed that irresponsible remarks or actions involving sensitive religious issues could easily inflame tensions, especially in the age of social media where misinformation spreads rapidly.

He urged political leaders, community figures, and social media users to act responsibly, practise restraint, and prioritise national unity when addressing religious matters.

According to him, constructive dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to the Federal Constitution are key to maintaining social harmony and stability.

Aaron also called on enforcement agencies to take firm action against individuals or groups who deliberately provoke religious or racial tensions, in accordance with existing laws.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding harmony and promoting inclusive values, stressing that peace and unity are essential foundations for Malaysia’s continued development.
