The federal government has officially empowered local authorities (Pihak Berkuasa Tempatan, PBT) to take action against unauthorised houses of worship across the country. The move aims to ensure that all religious structures comply with planning, zoning, and safety regulations.
According to officials, this decision does not target any particular religion but seeks to maintain legal consistency in land use and urban planning. Local authorities will now have the authority to inspect, issue notices, and take corrective measures on sites that do not have proper approval.
“This is about upholding the law and ensuring public safety. Every structure, whether residential, commercial, or religious, must meet regulatory requirements,” said a government spokesperson.
The announcement comes amid public debates over unapproved religious structures in urban and suburban areas. Authorities emphasised that while religious freedom is protected, adherence to construction and safety standards is mandatory for the welfare of all communities.
Officials also encouraged community engagement and dialogue, urging local residents and religious groups to cooperate with PBTs in ensuring compliance before enforcement actions are necessary.
