MELAKA: UMNO Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has announced his resignation from his post as Melaka State Executive Councilor, stressing that the decision was guided by principle and personal dignity rather than political pressure.
“I have dignity. I will not compromise on matters that go against my principles,” Dr Akmal declared in a statement released today.
The resignation comes amid escalating tensions between UMNO and DAP, with Dr Akmal affirming that he will continue to play a decisive role as UMNO Youth chief in countering policies and approaches he claims undermine Malay interests and national priorities.
Dr Akmal insisted that his role as Exco never limited him from representing grassroots concerns or defending the party’s core principles.
However, when issues arise that he perceives as compromising integrity or maruah (dignity), he prefers to step down and focus entirely on his responsibilities as UMNO Youth chief.
“UMNO cannot afford weak leadership or compromise on critical issues. As the Youth Chief, I will ensure the voice of the party’s younger generation remains loud and uncompromising,” he said.
Observers note that Dr Akmal’s decision sends a strong signal both to party members and political opponents that UMNO Youth intends to confront challenges, including DAP’s political maneuvers and rhetoric, without bowing to external pressure.
In his statement, Dr Akmal emphasized that principles and personal dignity take precedence over political positions or titles, presenting himself as a young leader willing to risk political fallout to uphold the party’s ideals.
Political analysts suggest that this move may further embolden UMNO Youth to take a more confrontational stance in the coming months, particularly as the party positions itself for future electoral battles.
