KUALA LUMPUR : Zamri and a co-organiser of a recent protest have been remanded for two days while police continue their investigation into alleged sedition charges. The remand order was issued following questioning over the planning and conduct of the demonstration, which authorities claim involved content or actions potentially inciting public unrest.
Police confirmed that both individuals are being held to assist with further inquiries, including examining digital communications, social media posts, and other evidence related to the protest.
This remand comes amid heightened scrutiny over public assemblies, particularly those touching on sensitive political and social issues. Authorities have reiterated that any activities deemed to incite disunity or challenge national harmony could lead to legal action under the Sedition Act.
Legal observers note that remands under sedition investigations are often precautionary, allowing the police time to gather evidence before filing formal charges. While supporters argue that the protest was peaceful, the authorities maintain that all elements of the law will be applied to ensure public order and national stability.
Police have urged the public to cooperate with investigations and reminded citizens to exercise responsibility when organising or participating in public gatherings, stressing that freedom of expression must be balanced with legal obligations and societal harmony.
