Strengthen Integrity, Not Lust for Power, Urges Sultan Nazrin

KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, has emphasized that true leadership begins with integrity, not a relentless pursuit of position or rank. His royal address was delivered during an official gathering with state leaders and community representatives in Kuala Lumpur recently.

In his speech, Sultan Nazrin called on all individuals in positions of authority to prioritize honesty, trustworthiness, and responsibility to the people they serve. He stressed that power and titles are merely tools to carry out one’s duties, not goals in themselves.

“Integrity is the foundation of trust. Without it, even the highest positions will bring no benefit to anyone,” he said. “Never let ambition for rank overshadow your duty to society.”

The Sultan further warned that an excessive focus on personal advancement or influence can weaken institutions and erode public confidence in leadership. He noted that genuine leadership is measured by one’s ability to make fair decisions, uphold principles, and serve as a moral example to the community.

Speaking in a more human-centered tone, Sultan Nazrin emphasized that leadership is not just about titles or recognition, but about leading with heart and sincerity. “The public judges not just who holds a position, but how that position is used to serve the greater good,” he added.

He also encouraged young leaders to cultivate integrity from the outset. Sultan Nazrin highlighted that future leaders must understand that personal success without strong moral values will not leave a lasting legacy.

“Great responsibility requires a clean heart and a sound mind. Integrity cannot be compromised for the sake of rank or influence,” he added.

Attendees described the Sultan’s address as a timely reminder in today’s political and administrative climate, where some individuals appear more focused on rank than on the responsibilities entrusted to them.

Sultan Nazrin concluded by urging all leaders, both in government and the private sector, to reflect on their intentions and objectives, ensuring that every action taken is guided by the principle of integrity.

“When integrity is strengthened, all decisions and actions will align with the public interest. But if rank and position become the primary goal, trust and direction will inevitably be lost,” he said, closing his address.
