KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 : Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has appointed Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz as an ex-officio member of its political bureau, marking another significant step in his political journey since joining the party last year.

The decision was made during PKR’s monthly Central Leadership Council (MPP) meeting, which also saw several other strategic appointments aimed at strengthening the party’s internal structure.

PKR information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Zafrul’s appointment reflects the party’s intention to benefit from his administrative experience and leadership background. He added that the inclusion of several senior figures into the political bureau would help enhance coordination and strategic planning ahead of upcoming political challenges.

Alongside Zafrul, Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, Mohammed Taufiq Johari and Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid were also appointed as ex-officio members of the political bureau. Meanwhile, Datuk Jamawi Ja’afar, Datuk Ruji Ubi and Datuk Yamani Hafez Musa were named as ex-officio members of the party’s Central Leadership Council.

Fahmi also announced that PKR’s National Congress is scheduled to take place in Melaka from June 25 to 28, 2026. He said further details regarding the event, including the agenda and organisational arrangements, will be released by the party headquarters in due course.

Beyond internal party matters, the council reviewed the implementation of key initiatives under the Madani government, particularly efforts to improve education quality, strengthen social assistance programmes and address the rising cost of living.

Measures to enhance aid schemes such as Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR), Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA), Jualan Rahmah and the Back-to-School Assistance were also discussed, with leaders emphasising the need for more effective delivery to ensure targeted support reaches vulnerable groups.

The leadership meeting also reaffirmed PKR’s commitment to combating corruption and dismantling cartel networks, stressing that firm enforcement is essential to safeguard public funds and maintain public trust.

Zafrul, who previously served as finance minister and later as minister of investment, trade and industry, officially joined PKR in 2025 after resigning from Umno. His latest appointment places him within the party’s key strategic decision-making circle, signalling his growing role in PKR’s political direction.
